UNCG Faculty & Staff: Engage!

"Genuine politics -- even politics worthy of the name -- the only politics I am willing to devote myself to -- is simply a matter of serving those around us: serving the community and serving those who will come after us. Its deepest roots are moral because it is a responsibility expressed through action, to and for the whole."

-Vaclav Havel

Thinking about a graduate service-learning course? Here is what one student had to say about hers:
"This class has truly been an antidote to the problem of alienation in higher education. I have enjoyed it so much. I only wish that I could have started developing insights into the issues surrounding my beliefs about education earlier in graduate school. The service-learning aspect of the class has allowed me to grapple with literacy theories within the dynamic and fluid environment of the community. It has been great to try my own hand at formulating theories to solve problems in the community that I have encountered. I think that problem-solving aspect of graduate education has traditionally been undervalued. This is unfortunate since a large part of the process of teaching involves developing problem-solving skills to adapt to a dynamic classroom.
Additionally, teaching problem-solving skills to our students enables them to become more confident and capable writers. Service-learning classes teach students to trust their own strategies of problem-solving and helps students to realize that learning is a continuous process. I know that what I learned this semester was inseparable from my own interactions in the community. This was a valuable revelation."
