Service-Learning Course Development

"The most important thing an institution does is not to prepare a student for a career, but for life as a citizen.

-Frank Newman, founder of Campus Compact and former president of University of Rhode Island and the Education Commission of the States.

Designing a course around community-based learning includes in-depth theoretical and practical applications which allow for maximum integration of service and classroom work.

Why "Service-Learning"?

Developing Your Service-Learning Idea

A student's work outside the classroom in a designated site should strive to meet a fifteen to twenty hour commitment per semester to receive a service learning course designation (SVL).
