Take the Leadership Challenge


The Leadership Challenge Program is a self-directed development program designed out of the Leadership Framework. The bronze level is a road map which guides all UNCG students toward developing a well-rounded start for life-long leadership development. Students will engage themselves in thoughtful, creative and critical reflections on each of the eight competencies by participating in OSL and UNCG sponsored events and workshops.

A UNCG Leader:

  1. Demonstrates Self Awareness and the ability to Manage Self-identified strengths, styles and opportunities for growth to achieve personal goals as well as to work effectively with others.
  2. Develops and manages Relationships and Groups through effective group facilitation, collaboration, division of labor, resolving conflict with civility, managing change, exhibiting political intelligence (includes recognizing powers structure, times to lead and times to follow), and negotiation.
  3. Accomplishes Tasks using available systems, planning and coordinating projects, and making decisions.
  4. Demonstrates Creative problem-solving skills and envisions innovative ideas by adapting to situations of continual change, providing out-of-the-box solutions, and taking reasonable risks.
  5. Demonstrates effective Communication Skills through a variety of mediums including written, oral, electronic, listening, non-verbal, mass communication, and effective uses of art (dance, music, theater, photography, videography, etc.).
  6. Understands the value of and advocates for Diverse groups to include: personality, culture, socio-economic status, gender, family of origin, religion, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, and generational differences.
  7. Responsibly Engages with greater Community (Campus, Greensboro, NC, World) by:
    • Assessing and understanding community structure to include economic and political structure, resource availability, and positional and non-positional power.
    • Recognizing and demonstrating support for an effective democracy which involves individual responsibility as well as individual rights (i.e. voting, volunteering, and participating in community government.)
  8. Makes Ethical Decisions by thinking critically, effectively balancing personal and professional ethics (and standing up for those ethics), showing concern for others' views, and demonstrating a personal motivation to do the right thing.

Three Levels to Pursue

Bronze: ENGAGE SELF
The Bronze level is a road map which promotes life-long leadeship development. Students will engage themselves in thoughtful, creative, and critical reflrections on each of the eight competencies by participating in approved curricular and co-curricular events.
Silver: ENGAGE OTHERS
By participating in the Silver level, students have the opportunity to expand on self-discovery of leadership values and potential. Through leadership philosolphy, mentorship, and program development, students utilize their leadership experiences and skills while engaging others in a common purpose. The Silver level will culiminate in a presentation of a developing leadership portfolio.
Gold: ENGAGE FUTURE
The Gold level is the highest accomplishment for the Leadership Challenge student. Participants will engage the future by using the leadership competencies to effect positive and lasting change in the UNCG community and beyond.
