"I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow-creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again."

-Precise origin unknown. Variously attributed to Quakers Stephen Grellet, 1773-1855, and William Penn, 1644-1718, and to Mahatma Gandhi, 1869-1948, Indian leader.

  • Could You Survive a Month in Poverty?
37 million Americans, 13 million of whom are children under the age of 18, live in poverty every day. Many more have incomes above the poverty line, but their incomes are still low enough to qualify for programs like Food Stamps and Medicaid. The recent economic downturn has seen unemployment rates rise and the use of emergency food pantries increase. It is difficult for those of us who have enough to truly understand the situations that families living in poverty experience every day - the decisions they have to make, and the fears and frustrations they feel. That is why NC Campus Compact is inviting you to walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty by participating in the Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS)!

The CAPS provides participants with the opportunity to assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget. The experience is divided into four 15-minute sessions, each of which represents one week in which you must provide for your family and maintain your home. As one participant commented, "This welfare simulation dramatically demonstrates how much time and energy many families have to give just to survive from day to day. It quickly dispels the myth "that people would do fine if they would only go out and get a job!"

The simulation will be held on September 9, 2008 at Elon University (McKinnon Hall). Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the simulation begins at 9:30. We will conclude at 11:45. The event is free unless you would like to participate in lunch. The cost for lunch is $15.

  • SURGE Seeking Students for Advisory Board
SURGE (Students United for a Responsible Global Environment) is looking for energetic North Carolina students to form a new advisory board! The SURGE Advisory Board is a diverse group of student activists from high schools, community colleges, colleges, and universities across North Carolina who work on social, economic, and environmental justice issues on their campuses and in their communities.

Purpose: The advisory board will serve three primary purposes:

    1. The advisory board will make recommendations to the SURGE board and staff about the needs of North Carolina student organizers and help SURGE implement the programs that best meet those needs on their respective campuses.
    2. The advisory board will keep the SURGE board, staff, and network informed about the work students are doing on their campuses and in their regions by contributing information to our board and staff meetings, website, newsletters, listservs, and other informational events and publications.
    3. The advisory board will maintain SURGE's accountability to our constituency of young people and youth-led organizations by ensuring that our structure and programming is democratic, foregrounding the concerns of students in our work, and maintaining a direct connection to the grassroots work we intend to support.

Please visit the SURGE website at http://www.surgenetwork.org

  • Small Grants Available for Youth Civic Education Projects
The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation has provided the Civic Education Consortium with another year of funding to support the Small Grants Program; the Consortium is now seeking grant proposals from organizations working to prepare North Carolina's young people for active, responsible citizens. The Small Grants Program provides grants of $1,000-$10,000 to fund innovative, collaborative youth civic education programs that take place in communities, schools, or government organizations. The grant is for a period of one year or less, beginning January 1, 2009. Collaborative projects, such as partnerships between schools and community organizations, other nonprofits, and/or government agencies, are strongly encouraged.
