UNCG has a variety of ways students can connect with the community. The Office of Leadership and Service-learning wants to help students understand the types of opportunities that exist.
Peer Council
A great way to connect with the community and develop your leadership skills. These students are here to help you find the service opportunity that fits you.
Service-Learning Courses
Service-Learning is a tool that some faculty members use to teach course content. By integrating a service experience into their class requirements, they are able to more richly expose students to course objectives, personal development skills, and civic engagement.
Servant Garden
A great way to get your hands dirty, meet other UNCG community members who are interested in doing good for Greensboro, as well as a wonderful way to play outside!
Additional Service Opportunities
Student Organizations
Each year student organizations volunteer thousands of hours of service to the community. In addition, student organizations help to sponsor special service days. Service clubs such as Habitat for Humanity offer an opportunity to do community service with other students while making new friends. http://web.uncg.edu/stn/student.groups/
Alternative Spring Break
Service trips sponsored by the Office of Housing and Residence Life are offered each year during spring break to locations such as Washington, D.C. and NYC. Applications are generally due in October. http://hrl.uncg.edu/programs/alternativebreaks/
Make a Difference House
The Make A Difference House is a service-learning* program for freshmen and sophomore students who want to volunteer and create positive change in their community. Through classes and hands on experience, students gain an understanding of how they can make a difference in the world. By living in the same hall and sharing a love of volunteering, the students create a close bond and have a great support system of friends. The staff for the Make A Difference House work closely with the Office of Leadership and Service-Learning to make students aware of volunteer opportunities in the Greensboro area. http://hrl.uncg.edu/llc/madh//
Student Internships
The Career Services Center works throughout the year to place students in both paid and unpaid internships that enhance students' exploration and preparation for future careers. http://csc.dept.uncg.edu/internships/
Federal Work-Study Community Service Program
Students who receive a work-study award as part of their financial aid package are eligible to participate in this program. While earning their award by working at a participating Community Service Agency, work-study students have an opportunity to make positive contributions to the greater community. http://csc.dept.uncg.edu/seo/
