Development Experiences

MBTI Workshop

The MBTI workshop is designed to be an in-depth introduction to personality type.

Selected learning outcomes for the MBTI debrief workshop:

  1. Basic understanding of scales upon which the MBTI measures personality
  2. Better understanding of self
  3. Recognition of strengths and weaknesses of various personality types and opportunities for growth
  4. Participant-generated ideas that can improve individual and team performance
  5. Awareness of resources on campus that can help supplement growth (e.g., Career Services)

Competencies related to Leadership Challenge: Self-Awareness, Communication, Relationship Development, Task Management

Resources participants need for workshop: Each participant needs a completed MBTI (or score sheet from a previous administration of instrument).  The MBTI is usually completed and scored on-site. Participants who choose this option need to show up 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the workshop.

Change Style Indicator Workshop

The Change Style Indicator is designed to help people understand their orientations toward change.  Some people love radical change, others want steady and methodical change, while still others prefer something in between.  One constant about leadership is that it involves change of one sort or another.  Knowing your own preferences for change is important, just as it is critical to understand that others might see the situation from another point of view.

Selected outcomes for the CSI debrief workshop:

  1. Learn about three unique styles for dealing with change
  2. Discover your personal position on this continuum of change style preferences
  3. Learn how your preferred style affects how others perceive you and how your style influences your perception of others
  4. Determine the “traps” in your style that can limit your flexibility and your leadership
  5. Learn the advantages and strengths that each style offers in a team effort

AWAKA

AWAKA

AWAKA is a 2-hour experiential simulation program in which participants are encouraged to develop effective processes for entering a working relationship with people who are culturally different. The simulation creates opportunities for exploring the miscommunication and conflict arising from working across organizational and cultural boundaries. The experience starts with this scenario: The Awakans are designing and building a monument to celebrate their recently acquired freedom and independence after centuries of dominance. The Richlanders who are economically and technologically superior are planning a trip to Awaka to aid in this construction project.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Raise awareness around diversity issues of culture, race, ethnicity, power and economics
  2. Uncover underlying (and sometimes subconscious) assumptions about others unfamiliar to you
  3. Experience the conflict and frustration that can result in a group when individuals and subgroups operate single-mindedly
  4. Develop understanding, cooperation and teamwork
  5. Establish a common basis from which people of different backgrounds and capabilities can work together effectively

Group Coaching

This element of Leadership Challenge and Semester of Service allows students with the same interests to focus their practice and create clearly defined goals.  Our coaches provide face-to-face meetings to help support students through this process.
