- MLK Day of Service Logo Competition: North Carolina Campus Compact is hosting a logo design competition for the MLK Day of Service based on the theme “Sit in, Stand up, March On.” Please forward the competition info on to anyone you think would be interested. The contest runs through November 13th! Good luck!
- American Red Cross Blood Drive: November 9th in the Alexander Room (EUC) from 8:30am-6:30pm The American Red Cross will be holding a blood drive. All donors will receive a t-shirt and a $6 movie coupon to see Saw 6. To sign up to donate visit here using sponsor code: 6528.
- Make a Difference House Donut Sale: The students of Make a Difference House will be having a donut sale in the EUC on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (Nov. 9, 10, and 11). The donut sale is a fundraiser to help elderly members of a local church pay for a new roof for their house. The sale will run from 8am to 11am all three days. They are also looking for volunteers to help man the table each day.
- Weaver House Volunteers: Urban Ministries will once again run the WE! (Winter Emergency) program this winter beginning December 1 and ending March 31. Grace Community, West Market UMC, First Presbyterian, Mt. Zion Baptist, and Pleasant Garden Baptist will once again serve as WE! sites. First Baptist and FaithStep will become WE! sites for the first time. Volunteers are needed to assist the WE! congregations. Those interested in volunteering are invited to attend a training event Tuesday, November 10; 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Mullen Life Center, First Presbyterian Church, 700 N. Greene St. You are encouraged to come early to eat at Hot Dish and Hope, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
- Glen Haven Development Center: Volunteers are needed to help with a spring cleaning in November! Be prepaired to smell the fresh aroma of blooming flowers while watching the leaves change colors at Glen Haven November 15th transportation is available to the site the van will meet in front of the EUC across from the Walker Parking Deck at 12:30pm space is limited.
If you would like to volunteer RSVP to Isaiah Foote c_foote@uncg.edu . - Urban Ministries Feast of Caring: The Feast of Caring, is an event which invites the community to come together to kick-off the ministry’s annual fund-raising campaign. It will be held on Thursday, November 19, between 5-7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, located at 1000 W. Friendly Ave. there will also be beautiful pottery donated by local potters in Greensboro and the surrounding areas. When you make a minimum $20 pledge or donation to Greensboro Urban Ministry, you will receive a pottery bowl or four Honor Cards. All participants are treated to freshly prepared soup and homemade bread. No reservations necessary.
- Kopper Top: Kopper Top Life Learning Center is in desperate need of animal food, hay, wood shavings, old towels, absorbers, and other animal related items. Kopper Top provides therapeutic riding services to individuals with disabilities through the use of animals to empower and enhance their quality of life. Animals that we use in the program include: dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, goats and chickens. Our cats and dogs eat the food from Sam’s Club, Members Mark brand. All natural treats, please. They could also use some volunteers on the 33 acre ranch with fencing and other outdoor needs. There are trails that have downed trees and limbs that need to be picked up and removed. - Salvation Army Fall Opportunities: The Salvation Army (SA) has several ways for UNCG students to get involved this fall. SA would like bell ringers at a variety of locations beginning the week of Thanksgiving for a minimum of 2 hours. They are also looking for money counters and bill straighteners in the evenings from 8:30 – 10:30 beginning the week of Thanksgiving at the Center of Hope on S. Eugene Street. There are numerous opportunities for volunteers any help that UNCG Students can give will be greatly appreciated. - SHIELD Mentor Program: The SHIELD mentor program is currently seeking college students as panel discussion leaders for our “Mentor Youth! Initiative” a month-long outreach campaign
held in January 2010 focusing attention on the need for mentoring at Emerald Event Center in Greensboro, NC. The “Mentor Youth! Initiative Fair” will be a collaborative effort between SHIELD and local mentoring organizations to create excitement about mentoring with an opportunity to showcase their programs and draw attention to the importance of mentor-mentee relationships while raising awareness about the benefits of mentoring, which will include informational tables, workshops and guest speakers. This resource fair will feature highlights from successful mentoring programs in our community, testimonials from local mentors making a difference and provide opportunities for interested community residents to get involved. The “Mentor Youth! Initiative Fair” will take place on January 9th, 2010. If you would like to get involved or have any questions you may contact the Executive Director, Precious McKoy, at 336-337-2771 or mckoyp@shieldyouth.com by November 15, 2009. - Glenwood Tutoring Program: The Glenwood Tutoring Program strives to provide its youth with positive relationships that help educate, encourage, and provides the equipment they need to transform their future. The Glenwood tutoring program is still in need of eight one-on-one tutors on Mondays. For more information about this program visit here. - Hayes-Taylor YMCA: Volunteers are needed to assist with a Holiday Craft Fair fundraiser for the YMCA Youth and Government Program. Volunteers will help with vendor set-up, break-down,as well as clean up after the event on December 13th there will be two shifts 10:00am-12:00pm and 5:00pm-7:00pm. Transportation is available a van will meet volunteers in front of the EUC across from the Walker parking deck at 9:30am for the morning slot and 4:30pm for the evening shift but space is limited.
